I was an engineer. I had spent years learning that systems behave in ways you can reason about: you read the logs, you form a hypothesis, you test it, you fix the cause. I assumed markets were the same kind of problem. Harder, maybe, but the same shape.
That assumption cost me about fourteen months.
What I thought the job was#
I thought trading was prediction. Find the pattern, call the direction, get paid for being right. It is the obvious reading, and it is wrong in a way that is hard to see from the outside.
The market is not a system you debug. It has no source code and no stack trace. The same setup that paid yesterday loses today, and no amount of reading the logs tells you which one you are in. An engineer’s instinct is to find the bug. There is no bug.
What actually determines the outcome#
Two traders can take the identical entry and end the year in opposite places. The difference is not the entry.

Why this is post one#
Because the date matters more than the details. Everything I have written since about discipline, delayed gratification and thinking in probabilities came out of this period. Not from reading about them. From being on the wrong side of each one with money attached.
The useful part of a beginning is not what you did. It is what you believed, so you can watch it break.
