Inversion fair value gaps, change in state of delivery, stop hunts, SMT divergence, m1 and m3 and m5 alignment. I did not abandon them because someone argued me out of it. I abandoned them because my own journal argued me out of it, and it took about nine months of reading my own notes before I listened.
The notes were the evidence # I log every trade. That turned out to be the thing that killed the method, because the notes stopped being about the market and started being about the rules.
Date What I wrote 26 Nov 2025 hesitation, waiting for m3 cisd is useless, m1 cisd with m3 ifvg 27 Nov 2025 never wait for m3 cisd. m1 stop hunt and cisd with m3 ifvg entry are enough 3 Dec 2025 did not wait for a stop hunt or m3 ifvg proper close 16 Dec 2025 small ifvg? against bias? idk 13 Jan 2026 50/50 area where both condition for longs and shorts are present 10 Feb 2026 plateform is shit first its fake confirmation Read those in order. In November I am refining the rules. Three weeks later I am contradicting the refinement. By December I am asking myself a question I cannot answer. By January the setup gives a long and a short signal in the same place. By February I am blaming the broker.
That is not a trader improving. That is a framework failing and a person patching it.
Why it fails the way it does # ICT concepts are not wrong as descriptions. Price does sweep liquidity. Gaps do get filled. The problem is that they are descriptive, not decidable.
A fair value gap is obvious afterwards. In the moment there are four candidate gaps on three timeframes, and the rule for which one counts is your own judgement. So every losing trade has an explanation available: wrong gap, wrong timeframe, did not wait for the close. The method can never be falsified, only re-specified. That is why my notes multiply rules instead of removing them.
A system you cannot be wrong about is a system you cannot improve.
What replaced it # VWAP fades. One instrument, one setup, one target.
Price leaves the mean, stays away long enough to prove it was not noise, then comes back. I take the come-back.
The long # Bars 5 to 14 sit below the lower band. That is the part that matters. Bar 15 is the first M5 candle to close back above it, and that close is the entry. Stop goes under the extreme at 97.5. Target is one R, which the fade reaches before it gets anywhere near VWAP.
The short # Same thing upside down. Price pushes above the upper band, holds above it, then an M5 candle closes back below.
The rule that does the work # It is not a reversal trade. I am not calling a top or a bottom.
Price has to break the band, stay outside it, and then revert. The staying is the whole filter. A wick through the band and an immediate snap back is not acceptance, it is noise, and it is the trade that looks most like the setup while being nothing like it.
graph TD A[Price reaches the band] --> B{Did it close outside?} B -- no, only a wick --> X[No trade] B -- yes --> C{Did it stay outsidefor several candles?} C -- no, snapped straight back --> X C -- yes, acceptance --> D{M5 candle closesback inside the band?} D -- no --> E[Wait] E --> D D -- yes --> F[Enter on that closestop beyond the extremetarget 1R] Qualifies Does not Contact with band closes outside it wick only Time outside several candles, held one candle, snapped back Approach extended away, returning already at the mean Trigger M5 close back inside trading the wick in real time Target 1R held for the full move to VWAP Why this is better, and it is not the win rate # The win rate is not obviously higher. The difference is that I can be wrong about it.
Every term in the setup is a number a computer could check. Did the candle close outside the band, yes or no. Did it stay out for N candles, yes or no. Did an M5 candle close back inside, yes or no. There is no timeframe to argue with afterwards and no fourth gap I should have used instead.
That means a losing month is information rather than an excuse. If the edge stops working I will see it in the data, because the data is answering the same question every time. Under ICT I could never tell the difference between a bad month and a misapplication, so I always concluded misapplication, so I always added a rule.
Three years to learn that the value of a system is not how well it describes the market. The Be-Do-Have model inherently bridges this gap, revealing that true success is a symphony where both internal and external elements play in harmony.
The Be-Do-Have model reverses this. By first cultivating your ‘Being’ - your core identity, values, and purpose - you lay the foundation for authentic action. When your ‘Doing’ is aligned with this internal truth, the ‘Having’ that follows is not just a material gain, but a natural extension of your integrated self. This creates a virtuous cycle: external achievements become reflections of your internal growth, and each success reinforces your sense of purpose and fulfillment.
“Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure.” Tony Robbins
This harmony means that even in the pursuit of external goals, the process itself is imbued with meaning. Setbacks are not failures, but opportunities for deeper ‘Being’ and more refined ‘Doing.’ The journey becomes as rewarding as the destination, because your internal state is not contingent on external outcomes. It starts with an internal shift:
“The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Peter Drucker
BE # Begin by being the person you need to be to achieve your goals. This involves cultivating the mindset, beliefs, values, and identity of someone who already embodies what they desire. For example, if you aspire to be a successful entrepreneur, start being confident, resourceful, resilient, and innovative right now. This is about internal alignment and self-perception. This internal shift is often rooted in faith or trust (whether in oneself, the universe, or a higher power). It’s the belief that by focusing on who you are becoming and taking aligned action, the desired outcomes will manifest. For many, this faith extends to a belief in God, providing a profound sense of peace and assurance that their path is divinely guided, and that challenges are opportunities for growth. In the analogy, this is the rider cultivating an unshakeable belief in his ability to guide the horse, and the horse, sensing this conviction, responds with trust and cooperation.
DO # Once you are being that person, the doing naturally flows from your authentic self. Your actions will be aligned with your new identity and internal state. This is where the principle of burning the bridges becomes paramount. There is no Plan B. A backup plan is a subconscious admission of doubt that pollutes your commitment. By focusing all your energy on a single path, you signal to your subconscious mind that failure is not an option. This unwavering focus, fueled by a healthy obsession, is the essence of powerful action. A confident and resourceful entrepreneur does market research, does network strategically, and does take calculated risks with conviction because there is no other way forward.
This approach encourages process-oriented thinking. While outcomes are important, the primary focus is on the journey of becoming and the actions taken along the way. It’s about enjoying the learning, the growth, and the daily steps. When you are process-oriented, you find joy and fulfillment in the present moment, and the outcomes become a natural byproduct of a well-executed process. This approach fosters resilience, as setbacks are seen as part of the learning process, not as definitive failures. In the analogy of the man and his horse, this is the rider consistently training and guiding the horse, focusing on each step of the journey, knowing that consistent effort will lead them to their destination.
HAVE # Finally, as a direct and inevitable result of being the right person and doing the aligned actions, you will have the desired outcomes. The success, the wealth, the fulfilling relationships, the vibrant health - these are the natural consequences of embodying the person you need to be and and taking inspired action. This model emphasizes attracting what you desire through internal congruence, rather than endlessly chasing external validation. In the analogy, this is the harmonious arrival at the destination, a natural outcome of the rider’s clear guidance and the horse’s willing cooperation.

The Seeker must accept a fundamental truth: life is not fair. It is a complex, chaotic, and often paradoxical game. The universe does not distribute talent, opportunity, or luck evenly. To pretend otherwise is to set yourself up for resentment and frustration. The key is not to demand fairness, but to learn to play the hand you are dealt with skill and wisdom.
“The world is not a just place. It is a relentless and amoral arena where the strong, the clever, and the lucky prevail.” Unknown
Paradoxical thinking # This acceptance leads to the power of paradoxical thinking. Life is woven with contradictions, and wisdom lies in embracing them rather than fighting them. The ability to hold two opposing ideas in your mind and still function is a mark of a superior intellect. Many such paradoxes exist, but here are a few to contemplate:
The Paradox of Control: The more you try to control everything, the more you realize how little control you have. True control comes from letting go. The Paradox of Choice: More options often lead to less satisfaction and greater paralysis. Freedom is found in disciplined commitment, not endless choice. The Paradox of Effort: Sometimes, the harder you try to force an outcome, the more it eludes you. Effortless action, born from a state of flow, is often the most effective. The Paradox of Success: What makes you successful in one stage of life can become the very thing that holds you back in the next. The Paradox of Surrender: You cannot win some battles by fighting harder, but only by surrendering to a reality you cannot change. The Paradox of Time: When you give time away freely to things that matter, you feel like you have more of it. When you hoard it, it feels scarce. The Paradox of Happiness: The more you actively chase happiness, the more it slips through your fingers. It is a byproduct of a life lived with purpose. The Paradox of Learning: The more you learn, the more you become aware of your own ignorance. The Paradox of Freedom: True freedom is not the absence of constraints, but the disciplined choice of which constraints to live by. Contrarian thinking # This understanding naturally gives rise to contrarian thinking. If most people are following conventional wisdom - often rooted in the ineffective Have-Do-Be model - then exceptional results will be found by doing the opposite. When everyone else is chasing the same carrot, the contrarian finds a different, more abundant field. This is not about being different for the sake of being different, but about thinking independently and questioning the assumptions that hold the masses captive. The contrarian path is often lonely and requires immense conviction, but it is the only path to extraordinary outcomes. In the analogy of the man and his horse, this is like the rider who, instead of following the well-trodden but inefficient path with the crowd, bravely chooses a less popular but ultimately more direct and rewarding route, trusting his own judgment and the horse’s capabilities, even when others doubt.

To effectively navigate the complexities of life, the Seeker must cultivate a toolbox of mental models. These are frameworks for thinking that help you simplify and understand the world, allowing you to make better decisions. They are like different maps for different terrains; having a variety of them prevents you from getting lost.
“The map is not the territory.” Alfred Korzybski
Here are a few essential models to begin with:
The 80/20 Principle (Pareto Principle): This model suggests that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Identify the vital few activities that yield the most significant results and focus your energy there. This is the art of strategic leverage. Inversion: Instead of thinking forward about how to achieve a goal, think backward. Ask yourself, “What would guarantee failure?” By identifying and avoiding the pitfalls, you clear the path to success. As the saying goes, “Invert, always invert.” First-Principles Thinking: This is the practice of breaking down complex problems into their most basic, foundational elements and reasoning up from there. It allows you to see beyond conventional wisdom and discover innovative solutions. Circle of Competence: Know what you know, and more importantly, know what you don’t know. Operating within your circle of competence allows you to make decisions from a position of strength and avoid costly mistakes in areas where you lack expertise. By continuously learning and applying these and other mental models, you equip yourself with a more accurate and versatile understanding of reality. A crucial distinction lies between process-oriented thinking and outcome-oriented thinking. The Have-Do-Be and Do-Have-Be models are heavily outcome-oriented. The focus is solely on the end result, and if that result isn’t achieved, it can lead to disappointment and a sense of failure. This can make the journey feel like a means to an end, rather than a valuable experience in itself.
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Lao Tzu
The Be-Do-Have model, however, encourages process-oriented thinking. In the man and horse analogy, this is the rider focusing on the rhythm of the ride, the training of the horse, and the beauty of the landscape, knowing that the destination will be reached in due course.
Finally, consider how we perceive reality: through a dualistic or probabilistic lens. Dualistic thinking sees the world in terms of rigid binaries: right/wrong, success/failure, good/bad. This black-and-white perspective can lead to extreme judgments, fear of failure, and a limited view of a possibility. It often fuels the outcome-oriented mindset, where anything less than perfect success is deemed a complete failure.
Probabilistic thinking, on the other hand, embraces nuance and uncertainty. It understands that life is a spectrum of possibilities, and that outcomes are rarely guaranteed but rather exist on a scale of likelihood. This mindset allows for flexibility, adaptation, and a more realistic approach to challenges. Instead of fearing failure, you assess probabilities, learn from experiences, and adjust your approach. It fosters a growth mindset, where every attempt, regardless of its immediate outcome, provides valuable data for future endeavors. This perspective aligns beautifully with the Be-Do-Have model, as it encourages continuous evolution and a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of being, doing, and having. It’s like the rider understanding that the journey isn’t always a straight line, and sometimes the horse will stumble, but with a flexible approach, they will still reach their destination.

At the heart of discipline lies a fundamental conflict that every Seeker must master: the battle between instant gratification and delayed gratification. This is the daily struggle between the man and his horse. The horse, driven by instinct, craves immediate pleasure - the sugar cube now, the easy path, the rest in the shade. It operates on the principle of ‘I want it now.’ The rider, however, understands the map. He knows that indulging every immediate whim of the horse will lead them astray, far from their ultimate destination. He must train the horse to forgo the immediate, lesser pleasure for the greater, future reward.
“Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most.” Attributed to Abraham Lincoln
Instant gratification # Instant gratification is the enemy of meaningful achievement. It is the siren call of comfort, distraction, and ease that pulls you off course. In the modern world, it is a weaponized force, with technology and consumer culture designed to deliver immediate dopamine hits, conditioning your horse to expect constant rewards with minimal effort. Succumbing to it is choosing the fleeting pleasure of the moment over the profound satisfaction of long-term success. It keeps you trapped in the lower-level paradigms, forever chasing external fixes (Have-Do-Be) or burning out on directionless action (Do-Have-Be).
Delayed gratification # Delayed gratification, on the other hand, is one of the most potent predictors of success. It is the conscious decision to endure temporary discomfort for a more significant future outcome. It is the student who forgoes a party to study for an exam, the entrepreneur who reinvests profits instead of taking a lavish salary, and the athlete who pushes through a grueling workout. This is the rider convincing the horse to climb a steep, difficult hill because he can see the beautiful valley on the other side. This ability is not about self-denial; it is about self-investment. It is the cornerstone of the Be-Do-Have model, where you be the person who is disciplined enough to do what is necessary, so you can have what you truly desire. Here, obsession becomes a powerful ally, transforming the conscious choice of discipline into an unyielding drive that makes delayed gratification not just tolerable, but an inherent part of your pursuit.
Training the horse, not punishing it # Mastering this internal conflict does not mean punishing the horse for its desires. It means training it. It means breaking down the long journey into manageable steps and celebrating the completion of those steps - finding joy in the process. It means keeping the vision of the destination so clear and compelling that the horse begins to trust the rider’s guidance, understanding that the temporary sacrifice is part of a much grander adventure. By consistently choosing the path of delayed gratification, you are not just moving towards a goal; you are forging an unbreakable will and a powerful partnership between your mind and your body.

Flow states are powerful, but they are not accidental. They are the result of a deep, underlying structure of discipline and consistency. While focus gets you into the zone, it is discipline that builds the runway for takeoff. Discipline is the conscious choice to do what needs to be done, even when you don’t feel like it. It is the bridge between your goals and your accomplishments.
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Will Durant
Consistency is the force multiplier of discipline. It is the relentless application of effort over time, in significant volume, that forges new habits and rewires your subconscious. A single, heroic effort is impressive, but it is the steady, daily practice that creates lasting change. In our analogy, this is the rider training the horse every single day, not just when the mood strikes. This consistent training builds the trust and muscle memory that makes complex maneuvers seem effortless in the future.
However, for true mastery, discipline often needs to evolve into something more profound: obsession. While discipline is the conscious choice to do what needs to be done, obsession is the burning, unyielding desire that makes the ‘doing’ not just a choice, but an absolute necessity. It’s the relentless pursuit that transcends mere habit, transforming effort into an almost involuntary drive. For the Seeker aiming for unparalleled heights, remember: obsession always beats discipline. It is the fuel that sustains the journey when discipline alone might falter, pushing you beyond perceived limits and into the realm of extraordinary achievement. This healthy obsession, when integrated with the ‘Be-Do-Have’ model, becomes a powerful force. It ensures that your ‘doing’ is not just consistent, but also intensely focused and driven by an internal fire, making the manifestation of your desired ‘have’ almost inevitable.
This journey of disciplined action must be paired with reflection. To ensure you are on the right path, you must regularly pause to review your progress. A powerful tool for this is journaling. By externalizing your thoughts, you can analyze your actions, celebrate your wins, and learn from your setbacks with greater objectivity. It provides a space to ask critical questions: Are my actions aligned with my identity? Am I moving closer to my goals? What adjustments do I need to make? This reflective practice is the rider consulting his map and compass, ensuring that the consistent movement is in the right direction, and making course corrections as needed.

To truly excel in the ‘Doing’ phase, it is essential to master your state of being. This goes beyond mere action and delves into the quality of your performance, which hinges on three pillars: Energy, Clarity, and Focus.
First, Energy is the fuel of ambition. High achievement is not sustained by willpower alone, but by vibrant physical and mental energy. This means prioritizing sleep, nutrition, and exercise not as chores, but as critical components of your success architecture. A tired mind cannot think clearly, and a weary body cannot execute with precision. In our analogy, this is ensuring the horse is well-fed, rested, and in peak condition before a long journey.
Next, Clarity is the compass, and it begins with a fundamental question: Why? Before you concern yourself with ‘what’ you need to do or ‘how’ you will do it, you must have a profound understanding of your purpose. This is the principle of starting with your ‘why.’ It is the core belief, the cause, or the purpose that drives you. Without a powerful ‘why,’ your motivation will be shallow and fleeting, easily derailed by obstacles.
“People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe.” Simon Sinek
When your ‘why’ is clear, the ‘how’ and ‘what’ begin to fall into place with much less resistance. Your purpose becomes the ultimate filter for your decisions, ensuring that your actions are not just busywork, but meaningful steps aligned with your core identity. This clarity provides the unwavering motivation needed to sustain effort through the most challenging times.
Finally, Focus is the application of energy with clarity. In a world saturated with distractions, the ability to concentrate on a single, important task is a superpower. This means consciously choosing to do one thing at a time and seeing it through to completion. Multitasking is a myth that divides your energy and diminishes the quality of your output. True progress comes from deep, uninterrupted work on your highest priorities. This level of unwavering focus often stems from a profound obsession, a relentless drive that makes distractions fade and propels you towards mastery.
“The successful warrior is the average man, with laser-like focus.” Bruce Lee
When these three elements converge, you enter a state of Flow, often described as ‘being in the zone.’ In this state, you are fully immersed in an activity, feeling energized, and performing at your peak. Time seems to melt away, and your actions flow effortlessly and intuitively. True mastery involves not just intellectual understanding, but also the ability to navigate and leverage our emotions. Emotional awareness is the capacity to recognize and understand our own feelings, as well as those of others. It’s about being present with your emotions, rather than suppressing or being overwhelmed by them.
“Anyone can be angry - that is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not easy.” Aristotle
Emotional control, often misunderstood as suppression, is actually the ability to choose how we respond to our emotions. It’s about pausing between stimulus and response, allowing us to react consciously rather than impulsively. When we operate from a place of fear, our emotions can hijack our decisions, leading to reactive behaviors that are misaligned with our true aspirations. However, by cultivating emotional awareness and control, we can transform fear into a signal for growth, and channel our emotions constructively. This allows us to maintain a state of inner calm and clarity, even amidst external chaos, reinforcing our ability to ‘Be’ the person we intend to be, and ‘Do’ the actions that truly serve our highest good. Think of it as the rider learning to calm and guide his horse through a storm, rather than being pulled along by its panic.
With a clear understanding of our inner emotional landscape, we can now explore how to optimize our state for peak performance and effective action.

Beyond the purely tangible, our internal states - our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs - profoundly influence our physiological responses, cognitive patterns, and behavioral tendencies. This intricate interplay forms a dynamic internal ‘blueprint’ that shapes how we perceive and interact with the world. Understanding this fundamental principle is key to consciously shaping your reality.
“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” Nikola Tesla
Fear or trust # Underlying all these models is our fundamental mindset. Are we operating from a place of fear or faith/trust? Fear-based thinking often drives the Have-Do-Be and Do-Have-Be models. We fear not having enough, not being good enough, or not achieving external markers of success. This fear can lead to anxiety, constant striving, and a feeling of never being truly satisfied.
In contrast, operating from a place of faith or trust (whether in oneself, the universe, or a higher power) aligns more with the Be-Do-Have model. It’s the belief that by focusing on who you are becoming and taking aligned action, the desired outcomes will manifest. This doesn’t mean passive waiting, but rather a confident and purposeful engagement with life, knowing that your efforts are guided and supported. This faith, when coupled with a healthy obsession, transforms mere effort into an unstoppable force, propelling you towards your goals with unwavering conviction. For many, this faith extends to a belief in God, providing a profound sense of peace and assurance that their path is divinely guided, and that challenges are opportunities for growth. In the analogy, this faith is the rider’s unwavering belief in his ability to guide the horse, and the horse’s trust in the rider’s direction, even when the path is uncertain.
Scarcity or abundance # This understanding profoundly impacts your mindset. A scarcity mindset is characterized by a persistent focus on perceived limitations, fear, and competition. This cognitive pattern can trigger physiological stress responses, narrow attentional focus, and lead to behaviors such as hoarding, a reluctance to collaborate, and chronic anxiety about resources or missed opportunities. In this state, your internal system is primed to detect and reinforce perceived lack.
Conversely, an abundance mindset fosters a state of gratitude, generosity, and collaboration. This cognitive and emotional orientation promotes neural pathways associated with positive affect and open-mindedness, leading to behaviors such as freely sharing knowledge, celebrating the successes of others, and confidently pursuing new ventures. This mindset cultivates an internal environment conducive to recognizing and attracting opportunities.
Emotions as signals # Your emotions are powerful indicators of your current internal state. Chronic engagement with emotions like shame, guilt, apathy, grief, fear, and anger can lead to sustained physiological stress responses and reinforce limiting cognitive biases. In contrast, cultivating emotions such as courage, neutrality, willingness, acceptance, reason, love, joy, peace, and enlightenment promotes states of well-being and cognitive flexibility. To shift towards more adaptive internal states, cultivate practices like mindfulness, daily gratitude, positive affirmations, acts of selfless service, and spending time in nature. These practices consciously influence your neurochemistry and cognitive patterns, fostering an internal environment aligned with growth and opportunity. This conscious cultivation of your internal blueprint is a vital component of the ‘Be’ in the Be-Do-Have model, allowing you to attract your desired reality by first embodying it internally.
In the analogy of the man and his horse, this ’energetic blueprint’ is akin to the overall ‘mood’ or ‘disposition’ of the horse, which is heavily influenced by the rider’s (your conscious mind’s) consistent guidance and internal state. A rider who constantly projects fear and scarcity will find his horse anxious and resistant, prone to stumbling or shying away from challenges. Conversely, a rider who embodies confidence and abundance, consistently guiding him with clear, positive intent, will find the horse responsive, powerful, and eager to move forward, even through unfamiliar terrain. Your conscious choices as the ‘rider’ directly shape the ‘horse’s’ (your subconscious and physiological responses) readiness to navigate the journey of manifestation.

Day Pair Dir Result R P&L Chart Notes 1 NQ short W +1.50 view powell speaks 1 NQ short W view powell speaks 2 NQ short L -1.33 view when a big move wait for an extra m5 candle or appropriate lot size 3 NQ short L -1.00 view no reason to trade 8 NQ short L -1.33 view no ifvg 10 NQ long W +1.50 view less than 0.10 lot means 40% ml range 10 NQ long L -1.00 view should have waited for 40% ml range 11 NQ short W +1.50 view 16 NQ long W +1.50 view good trade but red news dropped 1.5 target 16 NQ long L -1.00 view winning trade turned losing bc of trump…. 23 NQ long W +1.50 view 25 NQ long W +1.50 view i missed watch out the wicks 29 NQ short W +1.50 view valdi continuation 31 NQ long L -1.00 view small ifvg 1 Jul · NQ · short · W · +1.50R # powell speaks
1 Jul · NQ · short · W # powell speaks
2 Jul · NQ · short · L · -1.33R # when a big move wait for an extra m5 candle or appropriate lot size
3 Jul · NQ · short · L · -1.00R # no reason to trade
8 Jul · NQ · short · L · -1.33R # no ifvg
10 Jul · NQ · long · W · +1.50R # less than 0.10 lot means 40% ml range
10 Jul · NQ · long · L · -1.00R # should have waited for 40% ml range
11 Jul · NQ · short · W · +1.50R # 16 Jul · NQ · long · W · +1.50R # good trade but red news dropped 1.5 target
16 Jul · NQ · long · L · -1.00R # winning trade turned losing bc of trump….
23 Jul · NQ · long · W · +1.50R # 25 Jul · NQ · long · W · +1.50R # i missed watch out the wicks
29 Jul · NQ · short · W · +1.50R # valdi continuation
31 Jul · NQ · long · L · -1.00R # small ifvg

As we explore the power of self-image, we must also acknowledge a significant pitfall: the Dunning-Kruger effect. This cognitive bias describes a phenomenon where individuals with low ability in a specific area tend to overestimate their competence. This can lead to a dangerous, unearned confidence - a phenomenon sometimes humorously called the “Peak of Mount Stupid.”
“The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.” Bertrand Russell
The shape everyone draws - confidence against competence:
The popular illustration, not data from the original 1999 paper - the named stages are folklore, but the trap they describe is real.
For the Seeker, the Dunning-Kruger effect is a critical trap. In our analogy, this is the rider who, having only glanced at a map, confidently leads his horse into a swamp, dismissing the horse’s hesitation and the rustling sounds in the bushes as irrelevant. Your self-image is the mental picture you have of yourself - your beliefs about who you are, what you’re capable of, and what you deserve. It’s the blueprint that dictates your actions and ultimately, your results.
“Man cannot consistently act beyond what he believes himself to be.” Maxwell Maltz, Psycho-Cybernetics
If you perceive yourself as incapable, unworthy, or unlucky, your actions will unconsciously align with that belief, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. Here, individuals believe they must first do something (e.g., work hard, hustle relentlessly, network constantly) to have something (e.g., a promotion, wealth, recognition), which then allows them to be a certain way (e.g., respected, powerful, secure). This model is heavily promoted in professional life and the hustle culture.
“I will do everything it takes to have success, so I can finally be happy.”
While this model emphasizes effort and action, it often leads to burnout, stress, and a feeling of emptiness. The relentless pursuit of external achievements without internal alignment can deplete your energy and leave you wondering if it was all worth it. This approach is often heavily outcome-oriented; the focus is solely on the end result, and if that result isn’t achieved, it can lead to disappointment and a sense of failure. This can make the journey feel like a means to an end, rather than a valuable experience in itself. It’s better than just waiting to have, but it can still lead to an unfulfilling existence if the ‘doing’ isn’t aligned with an internal sense of purpose. In the Have-Do-Be model, people believe they first need to have something (e.g., a degree, money, a specific relationship) in order to do something (e.g., get a good job, start a business, be happy), which then allows them to be a certain way (e.g., successful, fulfilled, loved).
“If only I had X, then I could do Y, and then I would be Z.”
From a young age, our educational systems often reinforce this model. We are taught to have good grades to do well in college, to have a degree to do a certain job, and then we can finally be successful. This model often leads to a perpetual state of chasing. We constantly seek external possessions or circumstances, believing that once we acquire them, happiness and fulfillment will automatically follow. This pursuit is often driven by fear - fear of not having enough, not being good enough, or not achieving external markers of success. This fear can lead to anxiety, constant striving, and a feeling of never being truly satisfied. However, this can be a trap, as external achievements often provide only temporary satisfaction, leaving us feeling unfulfilled and always wanting more. It’s a cycle of external validation, where our sense of self-worth is tied to what we possess. If the rider ignores these behaviors, he will be constantly thwarted, believing his journey is cursed by “fate.” However, by courageously exploring why the horse is afraid or resistant - by doing the shadow work - the rider can integrate this powerful, wild energy. Imagine you are a rider, and your body is a magnificent, powerful horse.
“The body is the instrument of our soul, and the mind is its conductor.” B.K.S. Iyengar
The Man (Your Mind): The rider represents your conscious mind. He is the strategist, the planner, the one who understands maps and directions. He thinks in concepts, recognizes patterns, and can process information at incredible speeds. He can envision distant goals and devise complex routes to reach them. He is fast, analytical, and driven by purpose. The Horse (Your Body): The horse represents your physical body and its subconscious processes. It is powerful and capable, but it understands through feelings, sensations, and repetition. It thrives on comfort, seeks familiar paths, and can be resistant to change. It learns through consistent training and habit, not through abstract thought. The horse is slow to change its ways, but once a habit is ingrained, it can carry you forward with immense momentum. For true progress, the man and the horse must work in harmony. A rider who constantly battles his horse, or one who lets the horse wander aimlessly, will never reach his destination efficiently. The man must guide with clear intent, and the horse must be trained to follow, even when the path is unfamiliar or uncomfortable. I did not take a trade on one until March.
Two months of not trading. That gap is the most useful thing in this series, and it was not patience. It was the first time the cost of being wrong was high enough to make me stop and think before acting.
Why the gap existed # A challenge fee is real money paid up front for the privilege of being measured. That changes the calculation in a way a demo account never does.
On a demo you can start now, be wrong, and start again this afternoon. There is no forcing function, so there is no preparation. Put a fee and a set of rules in front of the same person and the question becomes different: not what do I think the market will do, but do I have something I can repeat under a drawdown limit.
I did not. So I spent two months getting one.
What changed once it was funded # The rules do the teaching. A daily loss limit is a hard stop on the exact behaviour that had been quietly costing me since October: losing, wanting it back, and sizing up to get it. You cannot revenge trade under a 5% daily cap. The account closes before your feelings do.
That is what I had been unable to impose on myself for five months. The constraint was external, and it worked because it was external.
Own account Funded account a bad day can become a bad month the day ends when the limit says so position size is a decision position size is arithmetic no deadline, so no urgency a target and a window nobody checks the rules check, every day What it did not fix # It did not make me a better analyst. The entries in March were the entries in February.
What it did was remove the worst version of me from the equation, and it turned out most of the gap between losing and not losing was sitting in that version. Not in the setups.
The Be-Do-Have framing is easy to dismiss as self-help language until you watch external rules produce the identity you could not produce on your own. The firm made me trade like a professional before I was one. The behaviour came first. The rest followed.

March 2023. I heard about FTMO.
Until then I had been solving the wrong problem. I thought my constraint was capital: a small account means small positions, small positions mean small returns, so the plan was to grind the account up until the numbers were worth the effort. That plan takes years and one bad week undoes it.
Prop firms invert the constraint. You are not trying to grow capital. You are trying to prove you can be trusted with someone else’s.
How the model works # You pay a fee, trade a simulated account against a fixed set of rules, and if you hold to them you trade a funded account and keep most of the profit.
FTMO’s two-step evaluation, as it stands today:
Rule Challenge Verification Profit target 10% 5% Max daily loss 5% 5% Max total loss 10% 10% Minimum trading days 4 4 Read that table again and notice what it is measuring. One number is about making money. Three are about not losing it.
The part that reframed everything # I had been treating risk management as the boring half of trading, the thing you do so you can keep doing the interesting half. The evaluation says the opposite. You can hit the profit target and still fail. You cannot breach the drawdown and pass on the strength of your entries.
The firm is not asking whether you can predict. It is asking whether you are consistent enough to be a known quantity. Those are different skills, and only one of them was what I had been practising since October.
A challenge is a specification. Most people read it as an obstacle between them and the money. It is closer to a definition of the job.
What I got wrong about it # I thought passing was the hard part.
Passing is a deadline with a target, and a deadline makes you trade. Keeping a funded account has no target and no deadline, which removes the one thing that had been forcing discipline on me. I would learn that later, expensively.

January 2023. That is the date on the account.
I was an engineer. I had spent years learning that systems behave in ways you can reason about: you read the logs, you form a hypothesis, you test it, you fix the cause. I assumed markets were the same kind of problem. Harder, maybe, but the same shape.
That assumption cost me about fourteen months.
What I thought the job was # I thought trading was prediction. Find the pattern, call the direction, get paid for being right. It is the obvious reading, and it is wrong in a way that is hard to see from the outside.
The market is not a system you debug. It has no source code and no stack trace. The same setup that paid yesterday loses today, and no amount of reading the logs tells you which one you are in. An engineer’s instinct is to find the bug. There is no bug.
What actually determines the outcome # Two traders can take the identical entry and end the year in opposite places. The difference is not the entry.
What I focused on What actually moved the number finding the right setup how much I lost when wrong being right more often whether the winners were bigger than the losers more indicators, more confluence taking the same trade the same way every time the trade the thousand trades I would not have believed that table in October 2022. I had to pay for it.
Why this is post one # Because the date matters more than the details. Everything I have written since about discipline, delayed gratification and thinking in probabilities came out of this period. Not from reading about them. From being on the wrong side of each one with money attached.
The useful part of a beginning is not what you did. It is what you believed, so you can watch it break.

20 October 2022.
